Getting a Texas driver license takes a few steps, but you can tackle them one at a time. Here is the teen version of the process, from class to road test.
1. Start Driver Education
Texas teen driver education includes at least 24 hours of classroom learning. You can study online through Drive Smart’s teen driving course. Choose a full program if you also want to arrange the required instructor-led in-car training locally, or ask about the classroom-only option if you will arrange that training separately.
2. Apply for Your Learner License
You must be at least 15 to get a Texas learner license. Depending on whether your course uses the concurrent or block method, the classroom requirement for the learner-license application is the first six hours or all 24 hours. Bring your DE-964 and the documents DPS requires. Check the DPS teen learner-license page for the current checklist and appointment process.
3. Practice with an Instructor and Adult
Teen driver education also includes 7 hours behind the wheel with an instructor and 7 hours of in-car observation. You need 30 more hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night, with an eligible licensed adult. Plan these hours early so you have time to build confidence.
4. Get Ready for the Road Test
Before a provisional license, you must be at least 16, hold the learner license for at least six months, complete the required education and practice, and take Impact Texas Teen Drivers. 5. Finish Your License Application
After you pass the road test, follow the DPS instructions for your provisional driver license. Keep practicing safe habits every time you drive.
